Paul W. Lofholm, President, Ross Valley Pharmacy in Larkspur, CA is the recipient of the 2011 Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). He was selected in recognition of his life-long work in continuing education, advancement of pharmacy practice and support of student pharmacist programs.
The Remington Honor Medal named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer and educator Joseph P. Remington, was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement. The award will be bestowed upon Lofholm during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Seattle, Wash., March 25-28, 2011. APhA's awards program is pharmacy's most comprehensive recognition program.
One of the letters received supporting his nomination praised Lofholm in stating, "Paul's long history of dedicated service is outstanding by any measure, as are his unrelenting contributions to the advancement of our profession. He is a pioneer in continuing education, patient monitoring and clinical pharmacy, all of which he advocated and advanced. Furthermore, as one of the nation's first PharmD. clinical instructors he has precepted hundreds of students, further contributing to the future of pharmacy."
A PharmD graduate from the University of California, Dr. Lofholm has more than 40 years experience in the pharmacy profession and has served on numerous professional advisory committees and organizational boards. He is currently Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, and President of Ross Valley Pharmacy, Larkspur, California. He is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific and Touro University.
In another nomination letter, a colleague stated, "Paul's positive attitude regarding the power and path of the pharmacy profession is contagious. His positive spirit comes across in normal everyday conversation, his teacher/mentor sessions and his addresses to a crowd. His influential spirit and affect on individuals and groups is the same whether providing guidance on future entrepreneurship or discussing pain management, women's health or even pharmacogenomics. Paul is a tenacious pharmacy leader and his drive and spirit continue to advance the profession of pharmacy."
Lofholm's dedication to the advancement of pharmacy has been recognized with numerous other honors and awards including APhA's Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award, ACA's Albert E. Rosica, Jr., and J. Leon Lascoff Memorial Awards and CPhA's Pharmacist of the Year. Lofholm is an active member of 12 pharmacy organizations including APhA, CPhA, ACA and NCPA. He holds more than 10 professional pharmacy certifications and has authored and contributed to nearly 20 publications.
