"Is Antiretroviral Therapy Cost-Effective in South Africa?" PLoS Medicine: R. Scott Braithwaite of the Department of Medicine at Yale University and Joel Tsevat of the Department of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati examined the results of a study published in PLoS Medicine that looks at the health and economic value of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Braithwaite and Tsevat conclude that the results of the study support providing HAART to HIV-positive South Africans (Braithwaite/Tsevat, PLoS Medicine, 1/31).
"Recruiting Experts To Serve on Technical Review Panel": The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is recruiting experts for its technical review panel, which reviews eligible grant proposals for technical merits and recommends funding proposals to the board (Global Fund release, 1/16).
"Fact Sheet: Continuing the Fight Against HIV/AIDS in America," Bush Administration: The fact sheet highlights the administration's priorities for fighting HIV/AIDS domestically, which include reauthorizing the Ryan White CARE Act, supporting research to develop new methods of prevention and treatment and providing funding for states to end waiting lists for antiretroviral medicines. The summary also describes plans to use programs such as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the New Partners Initiative to help meet international HIV/AIDS challenges ("Fact Sheet: Continuing the Fight Against HIV/AIDS in America," Bush administration, 2/1).
New Award for HIV/AIDS Journalism in Africa, Kaiser Family Foundation and CNN International: The Kaiser Family Foundation in collaboration with CNN International last week announced the new Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Journalism for reporting on HIV/AIDS in Africa. The award will recognize reporting that highlights the epidemic's far-reaching impact on individuals, communities and nations. Kaiser also will organize a special HIV/AIDS briefing for journalists expected to attend the July 2006 awards ceremony in Maputo, Mozambique (Kaiser Family Foundation release, 2/2).
