The Royal College of Nursing in Wales recently hosted a Primary Care event, entitled, "Shaping Primary and Community Health Services in Wales" at RCN Wales HQ in Cardiff.
The conference aims to share information about changes to the NHS and delivery of health and social services in Wales, whilst showcasing nursing initiatives which demonstrate how excellence in nursing practice is moving patient care closer to the home and communities where the people live.
Dr. Christopher Jones, Chairman of Cwm Taf Health Board, who is leading the Ministerial Primary and Community Services Strategic Delivery Programme, will be the keynote speaker at this event.
Dr. Jones said: "The health services in Wales is moving toward preventative, primary and community care. This will mean that the National Health Service with its partners will need to act as a team to meet the needs of 'Mrs. Jones' and 'Dai Bach'. Nurses are team players and their developing role in the new services will be one of the fundamental building blocks in achieving the new vision. Their dedication to excellence and care are key drivers for success."
Tina Donnelly, Director RCN Wales, said: "The Royal College of Nursing believes that accessible primary health care is vital to the prosperity and wellbeing of the community. Investment in maintaining the health of people in the community will save costly expenditure on secondary hospital care.
It is also necessary to strengthen and develop the primary care services currently provided by nurses employed by GPs."
