The Washington Post on Monday examined the new $1.5 billion... CDC campus in Atlanta. According to the Post, the new campus "reflects the contradictions of a nation worried about terrorism, global calamity and death while committed to personal happiness, healthy lifestyles and environmental responsibility." The new campus will replace two Atlanta campuses and all but one of the 35 rented offices that CDC has throughout the city, a move that will improve security, increase laboratory capacity and allow more intellectual cooperation, agency Director Julie Gerberding said. The new campus will have a command center that will allow CDC to communicate with public health officials nationwide, as well as the public, through television, closed circuit video and webcast. In addition, the new campus will have a $214 million Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory that will allow CDC to conduct five times more experiments on high-risk pathogens such as smallpox and Ebola. CDC expects the four biosafety level 4 suites in the laboratory to open in November. Dozens of other labs that will focus on lower-risk pathogens will open at the new campus in the fall, with additional labs scheduled to open over the next few years (Brown, Washington Post, 8/29).
